There are various types of therapy that occur in order to benefit the patient. Physical therapy restores normal functioning. Typically therapy starts within the home under home health care and the progresses to outpatient therapy in order to complete the recovery process.
In-Home Therapy
In-home therapy refers to home health care. These services are provided to homebound individuals who have recently been discharged from the hospital or may be living with a worsening chronic condition. Physical therapy within home health care settings is provided by Medicare Part A and must be prescribed by a physician.
Outpatient Therapy
Outpatient therapy typically occurs after discharge from home health therapy where applicable. Those who are willing and able to travel to a clinic will be provided therapy under Medicare Part B. Outpatient therapy is an extension of home health services. Many home health agencies and outpatient clinics will have an ongoing relationship in order to provide quality service to the patient. The continuity of care from in-home to outpatient therapy is very important.
Restoring Normal Function
Physical therapy restores normal function. That is, physical therapy services are utilized in times of injury or illness to help individuals restore the level of function they had prior to illness or injury. The term medically necessary is often used by healthcare professionals when discussing physical therapy services. In order for physical therapy to be order or prescribed by a physician, the services must be deemed necessary in terms of one’s health.
Continued Progress: Optimal Functioning
At times, physical therapy is believed to be an ongoing service, especially for those over 65 years of age. Unfortunately, due to the guidelines set forth by Medicare, that is not true. In order for individuals to continue the progress made in therapy they will need to hire a qualified personal trainer. An investment in one’s health is extremely important throughout the aging process. Many fall into the cyclical process that seems like a never ending wheel.
