Senior care at home is becoming an increasingly popular option for many families as more and more individuals wish to age in place. Private caregivers within the home is a viable option for those who wish to remain in their own home, even if they need assistance with daily activities. Hiring a caregiver is completed in two ways. One may hire a caregiver by going through a home care agency or by using a nurse registry.

Senior Care Through a Home Care Agency

A home care agency seems to be the safer route versus a nurse registry. However, with increased comfort comes higher costs. Caregivers within a home care agency are employees of the agency. Caregivers within home care agencies also receive:

• Licensure
• Continued Education and Training
• Insurance and Bonding
• Supervision with visits to ensure quality care is provided

One of the many concerns for families when hiring a private caregiver is the fear of a no-show. What happens if the usual caregiver is unavailable? Home care agencies are able to provide back-up caregivers in a moments notice, where are nurse registries cannot make the guarantee.

Senior Care Through a Nurse Registry

A nurse registry provides a caregivers at a lower cost because the caregivers are not employees of the company, rather independent contractors. The nurse registry is not responsible for the caregiver due to the nature of employment. Nurse registries may be beneficial because:

• The family may direct care as they see fit
• There may not be a minimum number of hours associated with care
• Caregivers are provided at a lower cost to the family

Unfortunately a nurse registry does not have the oversight to guarantee a new caregiver should a caregiver be unable to show. Where a home care agency would provide a staffed caregiver, the nurse registry may not be able to provide a caregiver that matches a the needs of the family.
