Healthcare might not be what it was once, and it may never be the same. Healthcare continues to evolve. The corona virus pandemic swept the globe in 2020 and marked several changes within the healthcare landscape. One said change that has come to light is the private caregiver hired by families to care for a loved one within their own home.
In-home care is often utilized by families who need assistance caring for a loved one. Families may need assistance or companionship due to physical functioning concerns or because a diagnosis of degenerative diseases such as dementia or Parkinson’s disease.
Previously in-home care was provided with little to no setbacks or limitations. Families were able to hire a caregiver to come in for as little as one hour in the morning, and one hour in one while the family was occupied. Say goodbye to that!
Many agencies today are placing minimums on the hours of care and companionship provided due in large part to the shortage of workforce. Those shortages mean agencies can either staff a two-hour shift or an eight hour shift. The decision isn’t necessarily in the hands of the agency itself, rather the caregiver. Many caregivers wish to take on the eight-hour shift versus four various two hour shifts to accumulate the same amount of hours. This leaves many families without much of an option, either hire someone for eight hours when only two are needed or allow for said conditions to digress to the point of eight hours being justified.
Agencies are unable to staff the short shifts, in which companionship is the true need. Perhaps spouses or family members need an hour here and there to run errands or continue with their favorite hobbies such as bridge, or lunch with friends. In the past, families turned to private duty care organizations to help. However due to many of the minimums being placed at 4 hours per day or 20 hours per week, the amount of care provided is often overkill.
Today, families are turning to us at LiveWell Health to help fill their needs. Although exercise was not necessarily top of mind for their loved one, there was a consensus that exercise is surely an added benefit.
