Independent living became a popular option for those who may have lived among a 55 and up community or simply within their own home for quite some time. Independent living is attractive for potential residents for a few reasons.
Downsizing to Independent Living
One of the reasons individuals choose to move to a senior living community is the need to downsize. However, it may be a challenge for some because their home is the place where there children grew up, where memories have been created or where everyone gets together for holidays. Another challenging aspect to the downsize is in fact moving from a home that may be 2,500 – 10,000 square feet down to an apartment ranging from 700-1400 square feet. Although there may be challenging aspects to the downsize, some feel it is necessary because of the maintenance aspects that come with a single family home.
Social Aspects
Some may choose to move in order to be surrounded by their peers. Independent living communities typically have extensive activities calendars for their residents with varying interests. The close proximity of residents also allows residents to create friendships with ease. Where a single family home may require driving to various social events, all of the events are in-house or transportation will be provided meaning you or a loved one will have no problem engaging with others. Various activities include fitness classes, happy hour, concerts, bingo, mah-jong, and so much more.
Ease of Living
Independent living also offers a much easier way of life. Many communities will offer in- amenities including a fitness center, salon, dining options and a resort style pool. Residents also love having the in-house maid staff. Included within monthly rent may e a weekly clean as well as laundry or dry cleaning. Many communities pride themselves on their dining options. Many communities have a formal dining room and a casual restaurant that serve dinner each night.
Independent Living is Not a Nursing Home
Nursing home is typically a term that groups many options together. However, the two vary greatly. Independent living does not offer any healthcare related services. Healthcare related services may be brought in, but they must be done so by the resident on an individual basis. The community is not responsible for doing so.
